Privacy Policy
Last updated: November 1, 2026
Givehold is a household budgeting app operated by Givehold LLC ("Givehold", "we", "us"). This policy explains what information we collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the choices you have. It applies to the Givehold websites and app.
The short version
- We collect what's needed to run your budget: your account details and the budget information you enter.
- We don't sell your personal information or share it for advertising, we don't show ads, and we don't use advertising or tracking cookies. We use Cloudflare's privacy-focused analytics, which doesn't use cookies, to count visits.
- We don't ask for your bank login. You enter or scan your own transactions.
- Sensitive financial details are encrypted when stored.
- You can download your data or delete your account at any time from Settings.
- If Givehold is ever sold or merged, your information can go to the new owner only if they keep this policy's promises for it (see "Business changes").
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your username, email address and password. Passwords are stored only as a secure one-way hash; we can't see them.
- Budget information: income estimates, categories and budget amounts, transactions (descriptions, amounts, dates, categories and splits), recurring bills, paychecks, savings, net-worth figures you choose to enter, and giving records such as tithing or offerings.
- Receipt photos: if you use receipt scanning, the photo you take. By default a small copy is saved with the transaction, where everyone in your household can see it; you can turn this off in Settings.
- Statements you import: if you import a bank or credit card statement, we read the file on our server to find its transactions and don't keep the file. Only the transactions you choose to add are saved, like any you type in.
- Household information: the households you create or join, join requests, and messages you send to your household.
- Support requests: the messages you send us, and optional basic technical details (such as your browser and app version) to help us fix problems.
- Waitlist and beta requests: if you join our waitlist or ask for beta access, your email address, and for the waitlist, which link or site brought you to us (for example a social media link), so we know which of our announcements reach people.
- Subscription consent: when you subscribe, a record of the renewal terms you agreed to (the plan, price, how often it renews and how to cancel), when, and from which IP address.
- Feedback: answers you give to in-app questions, such as votes on design choices.
- Payment information: when you subscribe, Stripe collects your card details and billing address (see below). We receive only what's needed to manage your subscription, such as its status, plan, price and renewal date, never your card details.
Information collected automatically
- Sign-in and security records: each sign-in attempt, with the time, the username or email typed, the IP address, the browser and device type, and whether it succeeded. We use these to protect your account and detect abuse, and keep them for about 90 days.
- Change history: a log of changes made to each household's budget (who made them, when, and from which IP address), so changes can be reviewed and undone. It's encrypted when stored and kept as long as the household exists.
- Visit statistics: we use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand how people find and use Givehold, such as how many visits each page gets, which sites and links bring people here, the type of browser and device, the visitor's country, and how quickly pages load. It doesn't use cookies or local storage, and it doesn't follow you across other websites. We see only totals, not who you are, and we use them to make decisions about Givehold, such as which features and announcements to work on.
- Cookies and local storage: we use only cookies that are needed to keep you signed in: one that lets you stay signed in (it can't be read by the page), one that tells the app a sign-in may exist, and one for sign-in steps such as passkeys. Your browser's local storage keeps your sign-in token and preferences such as dark mode, color theme and dashboard view. We don't use advertising, analytics or tracking cookies. Cloudflare may set its own strictly necessary security cookies to protect the site from attacks.
Giving and religious information
Givehold can track tithing, offerings and other donations. Depending on what you record, this information may suggest your religious beliefs or affiliation. We treat it like the rest of your budget: it's used only to provide the service to you and your household, it isn't shared for any other purpose, and you can rename, turn off or delete these features and records at any time.
How we use your information
- To provide Givehold: keeping your budget, syncing it with your household, calculating balances and giving amounts, and sending alerts.
- To send account emails: verification and sign-in codes, password resets, security notices (such as a changed password or email address) and important notices about your account or subscription, such as subscription confirmations and trial and renewal reminders.
- To process payments for Pro Household and manage your subscription.
- To provide optional AI features you choose to use (see below).
- To answer support requests and keep the service secure, reliable and free of abuse.
- To send occasional news about Givehold and offers. Every such email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing doesn't stop account, security or billing emails.
- To understand how Givehold is used, and to improve and develop it, using de-identified or aggregated information wherever we can (see below).
- To meet legal obligations, such as keeping records of subscription consent.
We don't use your budget information for advertising, and we don't sell or rent your personal information to anyone. The only way it would go to another company is if Givehold itself changes hands (see "Business changes" below).
De-identified and aggregated information
We may turn information into a de-identified or aggregated form that can't reasonably identify you or your household, such as average spending by category across many households. We use it to improve and develop Givehold, including its automated and AI features, and to publish general statistics. We keep it de-identified, we don't try to re-identify anyone from it, and we don't sell it.
Who we share information with
We share information only with the service providers that help us run Givehold, and only what each one needs. They may use it only to provide their service to us:
- OVHcloud: hosts our servers in the United States (Virginia), where Givehold's database, backups and app run.
- Cloudflare: network security, delivery and visit statistics (Cloudflare Web Analytics, described above). Your connection to Givehold passes through Cloudflare, which processes your IP address and the requests your browser makes.
- Resend: sends our emails, so it receives your email address and the content of those emails.
- Stripe: handles payments and works out sales tax. Card details and the billing address you enter at checkout go directly to Stripe; we never see or store your full card number. Stripe handles them under its own privacy policy.
- Google Fonts: the app's fonts load from Google Fonts, so Google receives your IP address and basic browser details when they load.
- Google (Gemini API): when you scan a receipt, the image and your category names are sent to Google to read the line items. When you use the AI budget helper, the details you type are sent to create a draft budget. When you import a statement, only its transaction lines are sent (dates, descriptions and amounts), after we remove account and card numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, reference codes and the names of people you paid or were paid by; your name, address and account details are never sent. We use Google's paid Gemini API, under which Google doesn't use this information to improve its products; it may keep it for a limited time to detect abuse, as its terms describe.
- An AI model provider for support (Google, through its Gemini API, on the same terms): when you open a support request, its text and category may be sent to an AI model to suggest an answer. Requests the AI can't answer are passed to a person.
- Exchange rates: when a receipt is in another currency, we look up that day's rate from a public exchange-rate service (Frankfurter). Only the currency and the date are sent.
Your household: people you allow to join your household can see and change that household's shared budget, and members see each other's usernames, but not their email addresses. Join requests must be approved by a current member.
Our support team: we can see your account details and support messages. We can view your budget only if you choose to share it on a support request, and each time we do, it's recorded in your household's change history.
Legal reasons: we may disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety or property of our users or others.
Business changes: if Givehold is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy or receivership, or a sale of all or part of its business or assets, your information may be reviewed as part of that transaction (under a duty of confidentiality) and transferred to the new owner. Whoever receives it must keep honoring this policy for the information we collected under it, and must tell you, and get your consent where the law requires, before using it in a materially different way. We'll let you know if Givehold changes hands.
Passkeys and biometrics
If you choose to sign in with a passkey (Face ID, a fingerprint or your device PIN), the check happens entirely on your device. We never receive or store your fingerprint, face or PIN. We store only a public key that lets us confirm your device signed in, plus a name for the passkey and when it was last used. You can remove a passkey at any time in Manage Account.
How we protect your information
Connections to Givehold are encrypted. Sensitive financial fields (such as transaction amounts and descriptions), receipt images, support messages and the change history are encrypted at rest, passwords are hashed, and access to our systems is restricted. Backups that leave our server are encrypted. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will notify you of a breach as required by law.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
Some browsers can send a "Do Not Track" or Global Privacy Control signal. Givehold doesn't track you across other websites, doesn't let others do so through our pages, and doesn't sell or share your information for advertising, so our pages work the same whether or not your browser sends these signals.
How long we keep information
- Your account and budget information are kept while your account is active.
- When you delete your account, it's closed right away and your information is scheduled for deletion after a short grace period (currently about a week), during which it isn't accessible. If you were the last member of your household, its budget is scheduled for deletion too; otherwise it stays with the remaining members.
- Accounts whose email is never verified may be deleted automatically, usually about 30 days after sign-up.
- Sign-in records, and records of who left a household, are kept for about 90 days. Beta requests that were declined, never confirmed, or already used are deleted after about 90 days.
- Waitlist entries are kept until Givehold opens to the public and we've told the list, or until you ask us to remove yours.
- Encrypted backups are kept for a limited time for disaster recovery (automatic daily backups are typically kept for about two weeks) and are deleted in the normal course after that.
- Records of your consent to a subscription's automatic renewal are kept for at least three years, or one year after the subscription ends if that's later, as the law requires, even after an account is deleted.
- Stripe keeps payment records as financial law requires, under its own policy.
- Sign-in and verification codes expire shortly after they're sent.
Your choices and rights
- Access and correction: you can view and edit your budget and account details in the app at any time.
- A copy of your data: download everything we hold about your account, and the budget of each household you belong to, from Settings › Manage Account › Download My Data (a JSON file). You can also export transactions as a spreadsheet from Search. Receipt photos can be viewed and saved from each transaction.
- Deletion: delete your account yourself from Settings › Manage Account. You can also ask us to, from the email address on the account. To leave the waitlist, use the unsubscribe link in any waitlist email or write to us.
- Emails: account, security and billing emails are needed to use the service and can't be turned off. News and offers can: use the unsubscribe link in any of them.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights, such as the right to know what we hold about you, to receive a copy, to correct or delete it, to object to certain uses, to appeal our decision on a request, or to complain to your state's attorney general. Contact us to exercise any of these rights, and we'll respond as required by the law that applies to you. We don't sell your personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We won't discriminate against you for exercising rights you have under that law.
Verifying requests. To protect accounts, we act on requests about an account (such as access, a copy, a correction or deletion) only after verifying that they come from the account holder or someone legally authorized to act for them, and we may ask for information to do that. We may decline requests we can't verify, requests about someone else's account, and requests that appear abusive, repetitive or unfounded, except where the law requires otherwise.
Where information is stored
Givehold is offered in the United States, and its servers are located in the United States. Our service providers may process information in other countries, with safeguards required by law. If you use Givehold from outside the United States, your information is transferred to and processed in the United States.
Children
Givehold isn't intended for children under 13, and they may not create an account. A parent can still track a child's spending within the parent's own budget. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us. We'll review the report and may ask for information to verify it. If we determine that an account belongs to a child under 13, we'll take the steps the law requires, which may include closing the account and deleting its information. A report alone doesn't mean an account will be closed.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. If we make significant changes, we'll let you know in the app or by email before they take effect, and ask you to review them. If a change would let us use information we already have in a materially different way, we'll ask for your agreement first. The date at the top shows when it was last updated.
